Blood pressure simply applies to the beating of the heart as it pumps blood to the rest of the body. We all have blood pressure as long as we are alive. The danger is when you have high blood pressure, also known as hypertension or, in some cases, low blood pressure.

Hypertension is known as the silent killer. Slowly and silently, it can destroy vital organs of the body without a person knowing it. Unfortunately for many, the first sign is often a stroke or sudden heart attack. For some, the first sign may also be their last. Blood is the river of life; the difference between death and life is when blood stops flowing. The breath of life, also known as the “life force”, is the secret of God. The breath of life is invisible and yet it is real. Just like the power of electricity – you cannot see the breath of life but you can see its effects. Every living thing that is alive will always have some activity going on, be it breathing, movement of fluids, ability to do various functions, etc. But as soon as the breath of life is out, everything comes to a stop and this is called “death”.

Blood pressure is measured by either a manual or digital blood pressure monitor. Hypertension (high blood pressure) is diagnosed when the top number (systolic) is consistently over 140, and the lower number reading (diastolic) is above 89. The average normal level is 120/80 while in some people it may differ slightly. It is normal to see someone with a blood pressure of 110/70.

High blood pressure simply means that your heart is pumping much harder than normal, just like someone who is pushing a heavy car that won’t start. Overworking wears us out and makes us tired. The same is true when it comes to the heart; pumping too hard, or working too hard tires the heart. Contrary to popular belief, high blood pressure is not a disease for the rich or the elderly; anyone can have hypertension if one is exposed to the risk factors.
